Description

London Ghost Walk

In traditional belief and fiction, a ghost is the soul or spirit of a deceased person or animal that can appear, in visible form or other manifestation, to the living. Descriptions of the apparition of ghosts vary widely from an invisible presence to translucent or barely visible wispy shapes, to realistic, life-like visions. The belief in manifestations of the spirits of the dead is widespread, dating back to animism or ancestor worship in pre-literate cultures. Certain religious practices—funeral rites, exorcisms, and some practices of spiritualism and ritual magic—are specifically designed to appease the spirits of the dead. Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life, though stories of the phantom armies, ghost trains, phantom ships, and even ghost animals have also been recounted. As one of the great urban centres of the modern world, the chaotic metropolis of London has one of the densest concentrations of paranormal phenomena, and this spooky walking tour brings the sometimes terrifying otherworldliness of this great city to life, or should we say death.....m...mwa...mwah....mwahhahahahahah! A valid Travelcard/Oystercard is required to take part in the London Ghost Walk as it involves numerous train journeys across London, some of them haunted!

by carlyrobyn (a TripAdvisor Member) on 11 Sep 2014

We did the ghost tour. Went with a friend who was visiting London for the first time- something a bit fun and different if you have already done the main touristy sites. Tom the guide was really great! Very knowledgable, relaxed and great sense of humour. I don't think this is worth £20 though- we booked on yplan for £10 and then it's worth it as you also get the boat ride along the Thames included. Overall worth doing if you feel like a bit of culture and walking and something a bit different. Don't expect anything too scary though

We very nearly missed the start of the tour after walking around the entire park expecting to find a huge statue we were supposed to meet at which turned out to be a tiny thing by a cafe near the entrance to the park (we had come into the park's entrance further over and missed it).

Tom was very friendly and entertaining. Knowledgeable and the evening was a lot of fun. He didnt rush and always made sure everyone was there. Boat trip down the Thames included. We were lucky we got our tickets on offer on Wowcher as i think i would have thought twice of paying the full price.

    by Rogers1conr (a TripAdvisor Member) on 11 Sep 2014

My partner booked this tour for the pair of us a couple of nights ago. Having done the Jack The Ripper tour in early February, we knew there was a fair bit of walking involved!

The tour was led by Rob and Sarah, a fantastic, knowledgeable pair who made everybody feel welcome and warmed the atmosphere.

We began our tour at Green Park for an introduction and a few ghostly stories about the park itself. Straight away I learned something about the very park I'd visited on numerous occasions, so from then on they had my undivided attention.

We then moved on to the Mayfair area, then to St James Park, later to culminate the tour at Tower of London where Rob and Sarah shared some more ghost stories and tales with us.

I strongly recommend this tour to anybody with an open mind for the afterlife, or to those who just love a good old ghost story! A big thank you to Rob and Sarah, who dedicate their time on a Saturday night to lead people from all over the world around London sharing their stories and experiences with us!

We were disappointed that a boat trip was advertised as part of the tour, upon arrival out guide made it clear that part of the tour was not going to happen and we would be taking the tube instead.
Our guide was called Tom and did a great job with all the stories and keeping everyone interested and part of the group.

My friend and I enjoyed the tour immensely - Rob and Sarah were brilliant tour guides and kept 30 odd people mesmorised for the duration of the tour. There was a lot of walking but this was to be expected, as it was a walking tour! We took in lots of places and Rob and Sarah had interesting and exciting tales to tell at each stop. It was a little disappointing that we didnt have the boat ride, but as the evening was a bit on the chilly side, I don't think it was a major loss as it was only a quick hop by the tube to the Tower. All in all, it was a great tour and highly recommended - a big thank you to Rob and Sarah for such a great experience.

by Benjamin F (a TripAdvisor Member) on 11 Sep 2014

My partner booked the London Ghost Tour for her and myself, and despite the bad weather and poor turn out, our guide, Rob, was fantastic. He was friendly and personable, giving a tour of some of London's ghost hotspots, and although it could have been a fairly dry affair, he brought it to life (or afterlife?) with enthusiasm and leaving us feeling that it was more than just a job for him; it was a passion.

The tour itself was very interesting - starting off in Green Park, making our way to Berkeley Square, and onwards, culminating in a stop at the Tower Of London, this was a tour clearly meant for people who haven't seen some of the best tourist places in London (I believe myself and my partner were the only English natives on the tour) but the addition of ghost stories made it more than just a plain and ordinary sight-seeing jaunt.

My one complaint about the tour was that we had booked a boat-ride as part of the tour, and we were told at the very start that due to timetabling issues, this would not be possible. We still received the same experience (and could tell what part of the walking tour would have been saved for the boat ride) but it felt a little bit of a let-down.

However, we would recommend this to our friends, and if they (or you) get Rob, you're in for a treat.

We really enjoyed the Ghost Tour, led by Tom and Rob.

Light hearted, yet extremely knowledgable about London and the stories of ghosts and the history behind the ghosts. Walking around London, into parts of London, neither my wife or I have ever been too.

It's great value for money and suitable for the whole family (my children 13 & 15 years enjoyed it as well) and the ferry ride was a nice way to relax and finish the tour with a ghostly story outside the Tower of London.

The only improvement we would recommend is colourful t-shirts for the guides. It will advertise your tours and give the guides (Rob & Tom, who were excellent) an identity & professional look.

The ghost tour was amazing!!! Our tour guides were Rob and Tom and they were both brilliant - they were really enthusiastic and charismatic and made the trip as memorable (and spooky) as possible, even adding their own scary stories. Rob and Tom said we were going to walk to all the different landmarks around London, instead of getting the train, which was perfect and I don't think the tour would have had the same impact if we had been hopping on and off trains!! Brilliant evening out and I have already recommended it to all of my friends!

There are lots of historical sites which the tour covers and a great boat ride at the end down the Thames. Despite not being in slightest bit scary, "The London Ghost Walk with Thames Boat Ride" was a thoroughly lovely evening.
Our tour guide Rob was an excellent story teller, despite the noise of the traffic and hustle and bustle of central London and led us at a decent, yet leisurely pace. Not really scary, the tour covers ghost stories that interest and amuse; it's also a good way to swot up on your British history!

We booked our ticket through YPlan, getting a half price deal (£10 down from £20), and considering the ferry service would normally cost about £4, this tour was amazing value.

Tom was our guide for the ghost tour and did a great job of showing us around and is a natural story teller. We'd recommend it to anyone who wants something different. One improvement would be to make people aware that they'll need a tube ticket before arriving...it wasn't a problem for us but could catch you out if you're not prepared.

We went on the Great British Ghost Tour and thought it was a good way to spend the evening. Our Australian guide was waiting for us at the appointed meeting place, greeted us in a friendly manner and headed off promptly for a wander around nearby sites said to be haunted, telling us some spooky stories on the way. We then caught the Tube one stop to Westminster to catch a clipper boat to the Tower of London. Refreshments and toilets on board, an enjoyable trip with good views on both sides. Then we stood by the Tower for more stories. The guide was friendly and entertaining and we would recommend the tour for anyone who doesn't mind a little bit of walking and something a bit different.

    by Henry700 (a TripAdvisor Member) on 2 Jul 2014

My family and I went on the Ghost Tour around London in mid June 2014. The meeting spot was easy to find and there were about 20 people on the same tour. The guide, Tom, was an Australian who has lived in the UK for many years. He is one of the best tour guides I have had the pleasure to encounter. He was loud and could be heard by everyone at all times and clearly enjoys what he does. The tour itself lasted 2.5 hours. For a walking tour this may sound like a long time but it went very quickly. The route we took was well designed with no more than 10 minutes walking before we would spot outside a house / park / etc. for another story. The price includes a trip down the Thames finishing at the Tower of London, where the tour finishes (so it starts and finishes in different places).

I would recommend this tour to anyone and everyone and even if you are skeptical about the existence of ghosts, it is still entertaining.

My Fiance bought me this tour for my birthday. As amateur ghost-hunters we were looking forward to an evening of London spooks! Our guide, Tom the Aussie, was at the meeting point at ten to seven and started the tour with our small but very select group (7 of us!) on time. Tom was very knowledgeable, personable and entertaining. We were a little surprised that he wasn't in some sort of costume; we feel GBT missed a trick here, but maybe it would be too embarrassing to travel on the tube in a frockcoat..?! We learned several new and interesting facts through the 2.15 hours, but there were only 6 stops for stories and quite a bit of walking (plus a tube train - one stop! - and a boat ride - very pleasant for 15 minutes). Overall, it was an entertaining evening and I would suggest it is a good way to have a whistlestop tour of London and pass an evening, but make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes!

The tour includes a 15 minute Thames Clipper ride from Westminster to Tower Hill which was very pleasant.

It should be noted that this tour is not one of these 'jump out and scare you' types of walk. Rather it is a very informative and highly entertaining walking lecture that makes you want to go away and research further on what you have been told.

The guide was really good, captivating and well spoken but not as scary as we expected. The location, route and stories were cool but we were expecting the guide to be kitted out and spooky (as we'd experienced with other tours) to add to the haunty-ness. Something that would have made a huge difference to the tour is photos of the places they speak of. They talk about a cold room and a room in an attic and a photo of a girl in a window - what would have really been cool was to actually see a photo of the places they spoke of. Even if they were fake it would just add something more. Good overall but I think they could do a lot more with it...

The tour was not spooky at all, but the numerous narrated stories surely made it very interesting.

We expected an entry to at least one of the haunted places (example, the attic) but were disappointed with it being only a road walk and nothing more.

The high point of the tour was definitely the boat ride (included in tour cost) from London Eye to Tower Bridge.

I do not usually do any of the tourist events in london but felt intrigued by the ghost tour of london having been on one in Edinburgh a long time ago and wished to compare. Perfect setting to begin with at Green Park and we were lead across many different areas of London with my favourite being the rare book store in Berkley square which the creepy story of what happened was expertly told to us by our guide Gary. The guide was excellent and full of knowledge about London and had an excellent sense of humour, even sharing some banter with one of the other people on the tour about their hat which got a good laugh from everybody. The tour included a free boat trip along the thames to tower bridge where the tour finishes.

The weather fortunately was calm and not too cold. Being an evening tour on a friday night I expected it to be a bit hectic walking through the london crowd but it was not that way. Only once did we nearly get lost from the group at a traffic light but I would recommend the tour to anyone and if they are lucky they will get to be guided by Gary as he just had what appeared to be a natural gift and made the evening superb

I won't go into detail of what the walk consists of to spoil anything, just make sure you have comfy shoes, dress warm if its cool, and have an oyster card or money for the underground as you do go on it once during the walk and it's not included in the tour fee. Did Ghost Tour with a Tom (who is hilarious!), included ghost stories from Green Park, St James' Park, Tower Bridge etc. Entertaining and engaging, perhaps group size should be a bit smaller, but great nonetheless.

Idea for the tour company: In Germany they do night walks around medieval cities where the guides dress in medieval/ guard attire and walk around with fire torches, gets you really into the mood!

by seanmwathen (a TripAdvisor Member) on 1 May 2014

My fiance & I did the Walking Ghost Tour which went through everything from the Most Haunted House in London all the way to the London Tower. The sights were great, very smooth trip, but the thing that made it the most fun was the stories we heard from our guide Tom. He was an excellent host, and told us some incredible stories about London and the places he took us. Tom even added in a few non-ghost stories just to give us some extra bits of history about London. But his ghost stories were chilling, and very interesting. He even had a great sense of humor to break up the dark, scary stories. Over all, i would definitely recommend this tour, and would recommend asking for Tom is possible. For now, I'm going to look into the other tours he discussed with us including the Jack the Ripper tour!

My husband and I joined the Great British Ghost Tour on Friday night. It was dark & rather chilly which made the experience all the better. Our guide Joe was brilliant with all sorts of ghostly stories to tell.He ushered us around, on foot, underground and even by boat on the river ending up at the Tower of London with more ghostly tales. His enthusiasm was second to none. A great few hours learning things we never knew about London. Well done.

Organised as part of a Birthday, this was a great alternative way to spend a night in the city, starting in Green Park and Ending up aside the Tower of London. Jill was our tour guide, and she had a plethora of stories memorised, which were factual, informative and possessed a spooky twist. It was a really pleasant evening, and she did really well projecting her voice over traffic, rowdy members of the public, ensuring she was heard clearly across the group. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening and left with a deeper knowledge of London's darker history and finally saw St James' Palace.

My husband and I really enjoyed the ghost tour on Friday 07MAR. Our tour guide (Tom) is a great storyteller, was personable, and kept the tour moving well. The company is clearly doing something right as there were so many people signed up for the tour that it had to be broken into two groups (2 different tour guides).

The tour starts in Green Park and finishes at the Tower of London. It also includes a ferry ride down the Thames (from the London Eye to the Tower) which was a great view of the city at night.

    Strongly recommended.

We did the Ghost tour of London last week. It's obviously a very popular tour as there were over 100 people when we arrived!! Luckily the various guides split up the group, into smaller groups and we had the lovely Gill as out guide. We began in Green Park, where she immersed us all in to the spooky world of plague pits and burial grounds. She has a great flair for telling stories and seemed to relish in the gory details of some of the stories. She had a great sense of humour, and the group were captivated by her personal telling of her experience with a ghost!! I would recommend this tour to anyone, and ask for Gill!

Just got back from the Ghost Walk, and it was brilliant! Our guide was Tom, an Australian in London, a very entertaining, funny and knowledgeable guy, highly recommended! And his voice carries beautifully, so no problem hearing him if you are at the back of the crowd. He answered a question I had extensively and happily, with great humour. We were lucky, in that the Jubilee wasn't running tonight, so we walked the whole tour, Tom threw in interesting bits of information on the way, and we got to see some beautiful architecture. The boat trip offers a loo / snack / drink break, and more views of this great city.

Went on the Ghost Walk with Great British Tours near the end of January. Had a great time. Our tour guide Joe was amazing and really enthusiastic, taking us on a trek to visit haunted areas of London. He told many grisly, scary stories with plenty of attention to detail - it also felt like a history lesson and since going I have looked up some of the stories to learn even more. The night may have been cold and raining heavily but that did not stop the tour taking place or sour anyone's mood - if anything it added to the spooky experience. We visited quite a few sites - all close by so you're never walking more than 5 minutes between stops, and it included a boat ride to the final destination of the Tower of London. I went with my boyfriend and we both really enjoyed it and highly recommend it to everyone.

I really enjoyed this evening's ghost tour of London with our knowledgeable guide Joe. He was good fun and told me things about the history of London and some of its many characters that I did not know despite being a Londoner myself. His stories were amusing, gory and entertaining. I found them pretty fascinating and he clearly has a love for the subjects that he discussed. He has certainly inspired me to do some more research on the stories that he covered. You do not have to be a believer in ghosts or the supernatural to enjoy this tour as from a historic point of view it is very interesting.

I do though have a couple of minor niggles and recommendations that did not detract from the tour but I feel would enhance it. The first is that during the ferry journey there was no interaction with Joe. I think if we all sat close together, the boat only had three other passengers apart from our tour group, our guide could tell us about some of histories and stories of the buildings we pass.

However, here is my main niggle though it is one that can easily be rectified. At one point I did what tourists often do and filmed a bit of video footage on my mobile phone. As we were walking our guide came up to me and said discreetly and politely "Can I please ask that you do not take any video footage in future". None of this was for commercial use and I certainly had no intention of filming the whole tour. Just bits and pieces. I also noticed that I had not been the only person filming video footage.

It has never been an issue in the past on outdoor walking tours that I have been on as when filming has not been allowed it has always been made clear by the guide at the beginning and on the website that filming is not permitted so I would suggest that your website makes this clear as does your guide at the start of the tour to avoid any confusion, misunderstanding or potential embarrassment.

Apart from those minor niggles I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and our guide did an excellent job. I will not hesitate to recommend it. Thanks for a fun, informative and enjoyable evening.

I went along on this tour with three friends on a perfect January evening, no rain, just a little ghostly cloud over a waning moon to set the mood. The tour was well organised with nobody lost or left behind. Our guide was John from Edinburgh who made the tour! He was informative, knowledgeable and had a beautiful speaking voice which carried to everyone in the group. He added personal experiences to the tales and made every attempt to engage the group. Extremely friendly and approachable. Sadly (or thankfully!),the only ghosts I saw were in my head brought to the fore by our guide's descriptive stories of each site we visited. Loved the trip down the river on the boat where there was the opportunity for a sit down, a rest room break and to purchase refreshments from the on board bar. You don't have to be super fit to participate, the tour is well paced with no arduous steps or hills. All in all a very enjoyable experience set in the best city in the world!

Went on the ghost tour with my friend and we loved it. It was funny, scary and informative. It ticked all the boxes. Our guide Tom took us to the most haunted house in London for us to try and capture a ghost on film. My friend and I didn't but someone else on the tour said they did. Highly recommend.

The ghost walk was a great chance to view some of the hidden historical places in London. Starting in Green Park, Tom, our guide, told us many Interesting scary stories which gave the tour a spooky feel. Nice to do with friends or family. The boat ride was only for 15 minutes but a chance to sit and admire the view and buy a drink/ snack. The tour then finishes off with a walk past Big Ben, across Westminster Bridge and outside The Tower of London. Make sure to wrap up warm!

Did the ghost tour last night with my boyfriend- loved it! Don't understand the reviews below, I went in knowing it was going to be a historic ghost walk so there would we walking (a lot) one train journey and a boat ride. Yes you was left alone on the boat, and I suppose I was expecting Gill to tell more stories during the 20 minute ride, but if I'm honest, after all that walking I was quite happy to just sit down in the warm and relax for a bit until reaching our next and final destination, Tower of London. You have to remember the boat is for the general public so I suppose this is why nothing is discussed. I really found the tour both interesting and educational, I was born in London and have lived around the area all my life and everything that was told I have never heard before. Especially the infamous Berkeley Square!
Although I did get this on a wowcher deal I would have happily paid full price.
Thank you Gill, will be recommending you and your company to friends. Hope your voice is back to normal soon!

I found this tour on a wowcher deal and couldn't resist! Was great value for money and would have happily paid full price for it. Both me and my partner really enjoyed our night.

Our tour guide John was fantastic! Had a great story telling voice and full of knowledge. We was led on a captivating tour around some of the most haunted sites in London and told their history and stories. Very interesting even if your not a history fan! Found out a lot of things I didn't know and in a very interesting context.

Also very much appreciated his warning of the pick pockets that dress up as shrek and clowns on Westminster bridge! I actually thought he was joking until I saw about 6 of them!

The boat ride adding a little something different to the journey and the views from on the Thames at night is beautiful.

The only thing that could make this tour better would be to go in a haunted building etc but overall was an amazing tour and would go again!

We did the ghost walk with boat ride that starts in Green Park. Our guide Ferry had a great personality and was an excellent storyteller (important, because the guide can make or break a tour). I've been on a lot of haunted walking tours in various places, and would have given this one 5 stars if not for the fact that we seemed to spend more time moving from place to place than hearing actual stories. Again, our guide was fantastic, it just felt like there were too few stories v. too much being on the go. Can't complain about the boat ride though, because it afforded such a lovely view from Big Ben to the Tate Modern. It was a nice touch. Just be aware though, if you go on this tour you will spend more time going from point A to point B than staying and hearing tales.

The tour went very smoothly and no people were lost despite some places being very busy, and also having to negotiate the 'tube' between Green Park and Westminster. We have been on several London walks, but this one was different and to be thoroughly recommended.

Bought a "Wowcher" deal for half price which included walk and boat trip. Excellent value for money, went very quick which is always a good sign. Started in Green Park then headed to Berkeley Square and learned some new info about London there and along the way, took the tube to Westminster and was told facts about Westminster Abbey and Houses of Parliament. Boat Trip (shame weather wasn't better!) to Tower Hill. Guide "Ferry" was excellent, extremely informed, clear knew his stuff - very obvious he is experienced at guiding and delivers good information. Big group which was split for 2 guides and there were parts of London that we visited that were busy and he looked after the group and we lost no one. He was interesting, informed and in places where relevant kept it light hearted. I would recommend this tour to new people to London and people like me who has lived in and around London for a long time, but walks past tree's, places and doesn't know the history. Enjoyed very much, despite the rain!! Wasn't scary, just "ghostly" interesting historic stories.

I was sceptical about how good the ghost tour would be and only initially bought my ticket because I received a half-price offer. When arriving at Green Park, the tour guides confidently called out to announce they were there, and I was amazed how many people had turned up to be taken on the walking tour.

My tour guide was a young, friendly and quite attractive Scottish guy, who I think was called John (sorry if this wasn't your name). He was very funny and very well-informed, even if some of the stories seemed a bit far-fetched! My brother and I thought that he was a fantastic tour-guide and interacted well with his group - he even dealt well with shepherding us across roads and guiding non-Brits around the tube system.

Yes, I had this walk as a surprise Christmas present, and it turned out to be a very enjoyable 2 hours on a warm June evening with my partner, my son, and two friends.

The walk started at Green Park, where we learnt a few very interesting things I never knew before about the park, and what lies beneath...
After stops at the corner of Jermyn Street, Berkeley Square (allegedly London's most haunted house), we took a tube ride to Westminster (& even got a surprise on the escalator!).
Digging the original tube lines out also meant disturbing lots of graves apparently...

After another stop beside Big Ben, we went over Westminster Bridge for another story, then took a boat ride on the London Clipper from the London Eye pier to the Tower of London for our final stop.

Our guide (Ben) was very knowledgeable & fun, although he was dressed in his normal, everyday clothes - I sometimes like ghost walk guides who get into character & dressed up, adding to the atmosphere.
The walk was spread out over quite a wide area, & really just as much a small evening tour around a few notable London landmarks, besides being just a ghost walk - often these are usually confined to a smaller area, such as the ones they do in York.

The boat ride was fun, & everyone appeared to be having a good time & getting into the spirit (ha ha) of the event.
So, I'd recommend this walk - maybe not the creepiest ghost walk I've ever been on (& not completely about ghosts either) & perhaps not the cheapest, but a good evening's entertainment before hitting the pub afterwards & having a couple of beers :-)

Went on one of the London Ghost Tours the other day and I really enjoyed it! The guides are super knowledgeable and whilst sometimes the sheer amount of stories for one particular location is a little overwhelming I really enjoyed some of those theories that were shared with me. Both guides are also great narrators, so if your English is not very good, I am not sure you will get it all. Also, make sure you have your Oyster card ready as you will have to travel one stop by tube, which I found a bit awkward but I guess inevitable.

Overall, I was really happy with the tour.

I took part in the London Ghost Tour with my 12 year old daughter. We both found it very enjoyable. The Tour guide was very enthusiastic and wanted to give as much information as possible. The tour starts at Green Park and involves short periods of brisk walking followed by a ghost story involving the area of a building in which you have stopped. An underground trip on the jubilee line (Haunted by Floating monks) ends at Westminster and outside the station tales of Westminster Ghosts are told. A brisk walk across Westminster bridge to the ferry which then takes you to the final destination of The Tower of London. Where more ghostly tales are told.
I would definitely recommend this tour. However, the guide did get one major fact wrong when at the Tower of London she stated the Lady Jane Grey was Henry VIII wife. The only other negative I would mention about this tour is that St James Palace was cut out altogether and generally things seemed a bit rushed. I would have preferred a slightly more relaxed pace with the opportunity for more discussion or questions to be asked about hauntings, etc.

We went to the Ghost Tour of Great British Tours. Our group consisted of two Londoners and two visitors from Germany. We all really enjoyed the tour. None of us is very much into ghosts or anything, but it was great fun and something unusual to do and the stories told are really weird and intriguing. For us Londoners it was nice to see London from a different angle and our guests enjoyed seeing London's attractions with a twist and also getting to know some unusual places. Our guide George was excellent and I can recommend the show to tourists also. No need to be scared that there will be language problems, because he spoke very clearly and vividly, so everything came across excellently! The guide pointed out that the tour is still being tweaked for time; it lasted three hours, which might seem long for some, but we were very happy with a long tour and with being shown so many places. The tour includes one trip on the tube from Green Park to Westminster, which I thought he handled very well (I had been a bit worried about getting a group on the tube etc.) and later we embarked on a ship, which was great and is included in the price.

George was great! The tour was enlightening and provided a rather different aspect to London. Even if you don't believe in ghosts the tour is fun and educational, definitely recommended.

Great tour around some of London's Spooky spots- Ferry, our guide was both historically knowledgable and funny. He kept our attention on a freezing cold night and the boat ride was fantastic too.

Really enjoyed the tour. The guide was great, very enthusiastic. My wife and I were very pleasantly surprised to see some new sites in Central London that we were not aware of (they looked very authentic, too) and to learn things about the sites we new. The tour also included a short boat trip from Embankment to Tower Pier.
