The Real Downton Abbey Tour

Winner of best mini-series at the 2012 Golden Globes, Downton Abbey is the most successful British period drama since Brideshead Revisited, with ratings exceeding 10 million viewers, and an estimated cost of £1 million per episode. Longstanding friend of the Carnarvon family, Julian Fellowes had Highclere Castle in mind as he wrote Downton Abbey, and you can visit the stately home in style on the Real Downton Abbey Tour. Downton Abbey follows the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, whose lives were changed forever during the First World War. The world of Highclere Castle and Downton Abbey were changed irrevocably by the First World War.

  1. “Even better than expected!”

From the front door pick up service our driver and guide Alex set the stage for a perfect outing. His knowledge of the family and property AND the Downton Abbey series was impressive. And he delivered the experience in such a laid back and relaxed way. Driving up to the stately home was a sight to see, and the manicured lawns and (not secret anymore!) gardens were in full bloom. Inside the home we got to see more than expected too. After leaving the grounds we were taken about 40 miles away to Bampton, which is used as the Downton village in the series. Top notch tour, top notch guide. We would definitely ask for Alex if we took another your with his company the next time we visit the UK!

  4. “Best tour guide ever!”

    by xxk8_82xx (a TripAdvisor Member) on 1 Jul 2013

My husband, mother and myself did the Downton Abbey tour in May and had a fantastic time. Our driver and guide, Alex Shenton, could not have been more friendlier or informative and made the tour so much fun for us. Thank you so much Alex for the best day!
