The 8 hour tour from London to "Downton Abbey " with Gillian Harker was even more than a seasoned traveler could expect. Gillian was more accomodating and knowledgeable than most of our guides throughout numerous countries. The tour was exactly as advertised, and Gillian made it the best tour we have had in years. I would highly recommend this tour to any Downton fan.

We had a great time seeing Highclere Castle and the village of Brampton where many of the town scenes are shot for Downton Abbey. The house tour was great - we got to see many of the "above stairs" rooms that are familiar from the program. (The downstairs scenes are shot in a studio in London.) Our guide, Gill - pronounced "Jill" - was friendly, informative and accommodating. She picked us up promptly at the appointed time and made sure we got to do everything we wanted during the day-long tour. Her suggestions were helpful and made for a very memorable day. We had a great time chatting with some of the townspeople in Brampton who shared stories about the production of the show. I've done a lot of tours and this one was among the best.

  4. “A day at Highclere Castle with a wonderful guide!”

by barbararadebach (a TripAdvisor Member) on 31 May 2014

The private tour of Highclere Castle, (Downton Abbey), was probably the most expensive tour I had ever booked. So, I was curious to see if it was worth the price. Without a doubt this trip/tour, with this particular guide, Gillian Harker, was worth every penny!
Gillian is very well versed in British history and the lore of Downton Abbey. She was able to accompany us on the tour inside the castle, which made it even more enjoyable. Even though they have docents in each room to answer questions we were fortunate to have our private guide. She knew lots more than the docents are willing to share. Gillian makes it a practice to learn some behind the scenes stories of the tv series.
She suggested a great place for lunch, then a short trip to Bampton. Though this small, quite village is recognizable to viewers, Gillian can show you which places you see on the show. They are not marked as such unless filming is taking place.
If you want to visit Downton, this a wonderful tour and guide!

What an experience! Our tour guide, Siddy, gave us the experience of a lifetime. We had a great time touring the beautiful castle as well as adorable town of Bampton where other scenes are shot for the show. When we left we felt that we had made a friend as well as experienced the unbelievable grandeur of Highclere Castle and it's rich history. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is a fan of Downton Abbey and British history.

We had the pleasure of having as our Tour Guide, a lovely young lady named Siddy. Our tour was scheduled on a very busy Sunday (The London Marathon was going on). We had to make our way to a different meeting point than planned. Siddy was right on time. From the moment we got in to her car, we knew we had the right person. We shared our somewhat similar knowledge of Highclere Castle as my son had been married there before the hit show Downton Abbey came into being. I knew some fun things and she knew more. The sun was shining, the skies were blue and when we approached the long drive to the house, it was like a beautiful painting; the magnificent Castle, green rolling hills and sheep grazing. Just what you imagine it to be.

We even had the pleasure of running into the Earl of Carnarvon while there and he was kind enough to pose for a picture with us which Siddy was happy to snap.

After Highclere, we traveled to the little town of Bampton which is used in the television show for the Village scenes, including the Church where Mary and Matthew were married and the home used as the Crawley residence.

Once our tour was over, Siddy had a couple of suggestions for lunch. We chose the Pub option and had a wonderful lunch with her.

We were so pleased we went and had such a fantastic guide with us. I would recommend this tour to anyone who loves Downton Abbey.

  7. “Even better than expected!”

From the front door pick up service our driver and guide Alex set the stage for a perfect outing. His knowledge of the family and property AND the Downton Abbey series was impressive. And he delivered the experience in such a laid back and relaxed way. Driving up to the stately home was a sight to see, and the manicured lawns and (not secret anymore!) gardens were in full bloom. Inside the home we got to see more than expected too. After leaving the grounds we were taken about 40 miles away to Bampton, which is used as the Downton village in the series. Top notch tour, top notch guide. We would definitely ask for Alex if we took another your with his company the next time we visit the UK!
